French language certificates at Wayne State: Bridging the gap in language education
In the fall of 2023, Wayne State University launched two new undergraduate certificates in French as an exciting addition to its language programs. This innovative approach to language education enhances students' engagement with foreign languages, providing greater flexibility and recognition for their efforts.
A Canadian inspiration
These certificates were inspired by how Canadian universities structure their degrees. Christine Knapp, associate professor of teaching and director of basic French at Wayne State, brought this idea to life.
"I am Canadian and I have a background in Canadian French language programs," Knapp explains. "I've taught in different institutions that had certificates in their programs. The idea for language certificates were borrowed from Canadian French language programs, which were quite successful."
Two paths to French proficiency
Wayne State offers two certificate options:
- Certificate in Practical French: This program includes Beginning French I and II (French 1010 and 1020) and Intermediate French (French 2010). It is designed for students who want to advance their skills beyond the basic requirements.
- Certificate in Conversational and Professional French: This advanced program includes classes that focus on learning through French films and literary texts.
Stackable success
One of the most exciting aspects of these certificates is their stackability. As Knapp puts it, "A student could do the certificate in practical French, then continue with the conversational and professional French certificate, and then even continue on with a minor if they wanted."
The new certificates offer several advantages:
- Official recognition: "When you show on your resume that you have a certificate in French, and that's actually official on your transcript, it feels more like an accomplishment for students," Knapp notes.
- Flexibility: Perfect for students with tight schedules, especially those in STEM or medical fields.
- Motivation: Encourages students to continue language study beyond the basic requirements.
- Enhanced employability: A certificate can be more meaningful to employers than simply listing language courses taken.
Who are these certificates for?
The certificates are ideal for any diverse group of students:
- Business majors.
- Science and engineering students.
- Non-traditional students, including retirees, who are looking to keep busy.
- Students who initially only planned to meet the minimum language requirement.
While the program has been successful, there are still hurdles to overcome. "The biggest hurdle is getting students to declare a certificate before they graduate," Knapp explains. "A lot of students don't necessarily know that."
To tackle this issue, the department is collaborating closely with advisors like Chris Clark to assist students in planning ahead, especially since not all courses are offered every semester.
Certificates are also offered in other areas, including:
Ready to expand your language skills?
