Literary and cultural studies
The literary and cultural studies area of the department includes research and teaching in British, American, and transnational literatures and cultures from the Medieval period to the present.
Our faculty have wide-ranging specializations, which include critical race studies, gender and sexuality studies, disability studies, the history of the book, archive studies, big data, the digital humanities, children's literature, and popular culture. We teach seminar-style courses that offer historical surveys, themed topics, and training in the theories and methods of literary and cultural inquiry.
Our students learn how to read closely, analyze and interpret texts, conduct advanced research, and communicate sophisticated arguments through clear writing.
