Physics Instrumentation Suite

The Wayne State Physics Instrumentation Suite provides instrumentation and analytical expertise to facilitate research and education at Wayne State University and other academic institutions, government and industrial customers.

This magnetic characterization facility consists of 1050 square feet of dedicated space and houses two Quantum Design Instruments: MPMS-3 SQUID Magnetometer and PPMS Physical Properties Measurement System, as well as the sample preparation bay. Designed as an open laboratory, each instrument has sufficient space for workgroups for user training and experimental collaboration.

The sample preparation bay is available for preparing a variety of samples for magnetic measurements, including bulk samples, thin films and powders. Film preparation equipment includes a stereo-optical microscope with a precision PELCO FlexScribe with tungsten and diamond scribes. In addition, the facility is equipped with an approximately 95% efficient helium recovery system, which consists of a helium liquefier (Quantum Design ATL-150) and a Cryomech helium purifier.
