Welcome from the chair, Anne Duggan

Anne DugganThe Department of Classical and Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (CMLLC) is excited to launch our newsletter, Lingua Franca. We hope to keep students, faculty, and alumni informed about exciting events happening in the department and about accomplishments by students, faculty, and alumni, among other newsworthy stories.

CMLLC is very happy to launch fall 2016 with a new and innovative program, Global Studies! Dr. Laura Kline (Russian/Slavic studies) is the new program director who has put together a dynamic interdisciplinary advisory board. The program has a language component, a core courses component, and focus areas in global politics and economies, global health and environment, and global cultures and identities.

We have a number of upcoming events. CMLLC is also planning its annual Career Day Thursday, November 10. As always, Career Day brings many companies and organizations to campus, including Mango Languages, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Peace Corps, companies from the auto industry, and more. Don't miss it! On Friday, January 27, we will be hosting our Second Annual Winter Ball, which brings student organizations together from our diverse language programs. Finally, CMLLC is participating in the WSU National Endowment for the Humanities Next Generation Humanities Ph.D. Project, which seeks to explore new directions in Ph.D. training for students.

Finally, in order to continue to provide exciting venues to complement a world-class education, we are also asking people to make a gift to the department or to one of our many programs to support scholarships, speaker events, and more. Here's to an exciting new year!
