A message from Department Chair Brad Smith, winter 2024

Dear alumni and friends of the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice,

Our academic year is coming to a close this April, and as you’ll read below, we’ve had some amazing events this past semester. Recently, we hosted our second career conference for students with 19 professionals representing diverse career fields, each contributing to a series of interactive panels. It was wonderful to see professionals from so many fields interact with our students in this daylong event which was incredibly successful again this year.

In addition to the conference, we are getting ready for our annual career fair with recruiters on campus Apr. 17. Also consistent with our push to assist students as they transition from the classroom to their careers, we hosted several career-oriented workshops this semester, including a suicide prevention and careers in intelligence workshops.

This past Halloween, we also organized a trick-or-treat event. Students decorated the hallways and faculty and staff handed out candy from their offices. The response from students was overwhelming, with hundreds of students converging on the building for a fun-filled couple of hours.

As always, I love hearing from alumni who are creating change in their communities, who have career news to share or who would like to be more involved with the department. Please get in touch with me at bradsmith@wayne.edu. Finally, thank you to those of you who are donating to the department. Your investment in our work is a powerful vote of confidence and I appreciate it. And if you’re considering a gift to the department, please visit our make a gift page. Thank you and have a wonderful spring.

Sincerely,

Brad Smith
