Corktown archeology project

Corktown artifactsStudents from Wayne State University, as well as University of Michigan-Flint in conjunction with the Greater Corktown Development Corporation under the direction of Dr. Thomas W. Killion first, broke ground in the fall of 2006 following the suggestion of Ellen Thackery based on her interpretive plan for her master's thesis at Ball State University.

There have been several successful excavation field schools since 2006. All of the field seasons posed positive results. Lab and research is an on-going project.

The majority of the students that participated in the field schools were anthropology majors looking to broaden their knowledge of historical archaeology. Those that were not anthropology majors were looking to understand more about the history of Detroit or looking to edify themselves with practical application of hands-on work, thus excavating in the backyard of the Worker's Row House in Corktown, Detroit, Michigan.
