Full-Time Faculty Teaching in Spring/Summer Policy

Chairs need approval in writing via email from the associate dean of faculty affairs, every year, for full-time (.50 FTE or higher) faculty (non-tenure-track, tenure-track and tenured) to teach in spring/summer. Please provide any requests at least two weeks before the course scheduling deadline in February.

The college strongly recommends core courses to be taught during regular semesters (fall or winter). If this is not possible, write a justification why this course cannot be offered during regular semesters and include why the course cannot be taught by a part-time faculty. Please provide the total number of students registered for that course in the previous spring/summer. A robust enrollment of approximately 40 students is expected in 1000-2000 level courses for a full-time faculty to teach during spring/summer.

Consistent with article XXXIV of the AAUP-AFT collective bargaining agreement, the compensation per credit hour for spring/summer teaching for faculty will be $1,800 per credit hour. Any exception to the minimum pay per credit hour must be made by request to the associate dean of faculty affairs and subsequently approved by the dean and BAO.

The decision on whether to accept a spring/summer assignment is entirely up to the faculty member and refusal to do so cannot be held against the faculty member in annual reviews, renewals or promotion and tenure decisions.
