Policy for Graders Request for a Course

According to the union contracts (see AAUP-AFT: Article XXIV.I.B.2), faculty/instructors can request a grader for courses with high enrollment. The request may be denied, at which point the chair/dean/director will explain the reason for the denial.

Generally, CLAS will support compensating students to serve as graders based on the following compensation rates for classes with enrollments of 50 or more students.

Compensation guidelines for graders

Enrollment:

  • 50-59 students: $975 (5 hours per week)
  • 60-69 students: $1,170 (6 hours per week)
  • 100-109 students: $1,950 (10 hours per week)
  • 260-269 students: $5,000 (26 hours per week; cannot be a student assistant)

For every increase of 10 students, it adds $195 (one hour/week at $13/hour for 15 weeks of teaching), or a fraction thereof. The maximum compensation for a grader for a course of more than 260 students is $5,000. Hopefully, this gives incentive to run courses with a larger enrollment.

When a chair submits an EDSW to CLAS-HR email (CLASHR@wayne.edu) to pay for a grader, please also attach a brief memo of justification that includes:

  • Course number, course title and number of students enrolled in the course at the time of request
  • Rationale, if the amount exceeds normal compensation guidelines
  • Course syllabus
