Astronomer and philanthropist Russ Carroll spoke with WDET about the recent relocation of Wayne State University's Zowada Memorial Observatory from Rodeo, New Mexico, to Palomar Mountain in California.

The observatory, a state-of-the-art 20-inch robotically-controlled remote telescope, supports research projects requiring nightly imaging of galaxies.

During the interview, Carroll reflected on his decision to donate the observatory to WSU in 2018 in memory of his childhood friend Dan Zowada and shared insights into the observatory’s role in Wayne State’s research.

Carroll also discussed the logistical challenges of maintaining the remote facility and how the new location opens opportunities for public outreach events.
