Detroit Public Schools teachers learn to use solar telescopes

Last month, educators from Detroit Public Schools (DPS) gathered at the Wayne State University planetarium to spend a day learning about astronomy.

The Solar Observing in Schools program is led by Professor Ed Cackett as part of his National Science Foundation CAREER grant. The program is designed to give astronomy training to middle school and high school teachers, as well as providing access to solar telescopes.

Ten solar telescopes are available for DPS teachers to borrow and use in the classroom, giving students the exciting opportunity to safely view sunspots and prominences on the surface of the sun!
