Warrior Insiders: Five things I wish I knew about Wayne State before coming here

Cody Bannick poses in a suit, smiling at cameraStarting at Wayne State University has been an exciting journey, but like any new chapter in life, there are things I wish I had known before diving in. From navigating campus life to understanding the resources available, here's a list of five things I wish I had known before stepping foot on campus.

1) Wayne State’s campus Is bigger than it looks

When you first visit Wayne State’s campus, it seems pretty manageable. But once you start classes, you quickly realize that there are more buildings, halls and hidden spots than you expected. The campus is spread out, and there are a ton of departments and resources tucked away in places you might not initially think to look. Don’t be afraid to ask for directions, and definitely take the time to explore!

2) WSU offers a ton of student support

I knew Wayne State was big on academics, but I didn’t realize just how much support is available to help students succeed. From tutoring services and the writing center to mentorship programs and career counseling, there are countless resources to help you stay on track. The Academic Success Center is a great place to start if you need academic help or just someone to talk to about your goals.

3) Commuting can be a challenge

As someone who commutes to campus, I was surprised by how long it can take to park and get to class. Parking can be tricky and expensive, so I highly recommend budgeting time and maybe looking into alternative options, like carpooling or using the campus shuttle service. If you’re coming from out of town, figuring out your commute logistics before classes start will save you a lot of stress.

4) There's a real sense of community on campus

I had heard about the diversity and opportunities at Wayne State, but I didn’t expect how welcoming and tight-knit the campus community is. Whether it's through student organizations, campus events, or just hanging out in the Student Center, there’s a real sense of belonging here. Getting involved in student groups is a great way to meet people and feel connected, especially if you’re new to Detroit.

5) Detroit is an amazing city to explore

Wayne State is right in the heart of Detroit, which means there’s so much to see and do. The city is rich in culture, history, and opportunities for internships and jobs. From sports events and concerts to museums and parks, there’s something for everyone. I wish I had realized sooner how much there is to explore right outside campus—don’t let college life keep you stuck on campus; Detroit has a lot to offer!

Final thoughts

There’s so much to learn when you start at a new university, and Wayne State definitely has its own unique vibe. What I wish I had known before coming here has only helped me grow more comfortable and confident in my journey. Whether it’s knowing where to find support or realizing just how much there is to do in Detroit, I hope these tips help you make the most of your experience at WSU!
