Getting to know Dr. Tom Kohn
Beyond Wayne, I like to read, follow San Francisco Giants baseball and do whatever my beloved wife and thirteen-year-old twins (one boy and one girl) want me to do.
Education
B.A. in English, with secondary teaching certification, from Carleton College (1990) and a Ph.D. in Classics from the University of Minnesota (2001).
What is your role as an Associate Professor?
I am fortunate to wear a number of hats at WSU. As a professor of Latin and Classical Civilization, I help students develop not only their knowledge base but more importantly their abilities to make connections and to ask - and answer - interesting questions. As the faculty advisor for Classical Studies, my job, together with the Department academic advisor, is to help Classics majors negotiate the sometimes treacherous waters of WSU and arrive at graduation safely and in a timely fashion.
How would you describe yourself?
Apparently as someone who likes convoluted metaphors.
What are some of your hobbies?
Reading, comic books, raising 13-year-old twins.
What do you like best about working at Wayne State?
The students.
What's your favorite pie?
Cherry.
Where is the best place you've traveled to and why?
I'll let you know when I get there.
What advice can you give your students in order to succeed both in college and in life?
Get everything in writing. And if you see a book that you think you are going to want, buy it; it is likely to go out of print or otherwise become unavailable.
