CMLLC hosts annual Foreign Languages Career Day

On the afternoon of March 5, over 35 generous volunteers from the community met with students in the Student Center to discuss the importance of a foreign language in their professional careers. Richard Walawender, the Honorary Consul of Poland in Detroit and a lawyer with Miller Canfield, and Mark Ferguson, director of WSU's Junior Year in Munich, started the event with detailed information regarding the professional opportunities triggered by knowledge of a foreign language.
Then, for approximately an hour and a half, the many students present dispersed throughout the cavernous rooms of Student Centers A, B, and C for one-on-one conversations with the outside visitors.
This CMLLC annual event will return next year for the seventh time. It is grounded in the certain knowledge that foreign-language study should never be a burden, for it can be a doorway to new, unexpected, and exciting professional opportunities in the global economy that surrounds us.
One of our outside volunteers, a former WSU student and a lawyer with a degree from the University of Michigan Law School, told us that the Law School admissions committee said her study of Russian enhanced her qualifications for admission. Now, she is working in a Detroit-area law firm, and it is a common experience for a letter or fax to arrive, and the recipient will stand up and shout, "Does anyone know what language this is?"
The professional opportunities grow year after year.
