How to apply
- Master of Arts in History
Students are admitted to the master's program for both fall and winter terms. Applicants who would like to be considered for scholarships must apply by January 15 to begin the following fall. Students who do not wish to be considered for scholarships must apply by April 15 to begin the following fall or October 15 to begin the following winter.

- Master of Arts in Public History
Students are admitted to the master's program for both fall and winter terms. Applicants who would like to be considered for scholarships must apply by January 15 to begin the following fall. - Ph.D. in History
The application deadline for the Ph.D. program is January 15 for admission the following fall. Please review the admissions section of the graduate handbook (PDF) for instructions on how to prepare your application materials.
- Joint Master of Arts in History and Juris Doctor
Students are admitted to the master's program for both fall and winter terms. Applicants must apply by April 15 to begin the following fall or October 15 to begin the following winter.
You must complete your first year of law school at Wayne State University before beginning the dual degree program. In your statement of purpose for the M.A. in History, indicate that you intend to pursue a dual degree. Please review the admissions section of the graduate handbook (PDF) for instructions on how to prepare your application materials.
- Joint Master of Arts in History and Library & Information Science
Students are admitted to the master's program for both fall and winter terms. Applicants who would like to be considered for scholarships through the Department of History must apply by January 15 to begin the following fall (SIS also offers scholarships and sets its own deadlines).
Students who do not wish to be considered for scholarships must apply by April 15 to begin the following fall or October 15 to begin the following winter.

- Graduate Bridge Certificate in World History
Students are admitted to the certificate program for both fall and winter terms. Applicants apply by April 15 to begin the following fall or October 15 to begin the following winter. To apply, please submit your transcripts from all previously completed degrees and a statement of purpose via our admissions portal.
Your 500 to 750-word academic statement of purpose should convey as clearly and concisely as possible your:
- Intellectual interests
- Preparation for the program (e.g., how have your previous educational and/or professional experiences given you skills and tools to succeed in our graduate program?)
- Career goals or avocational interest in pursuing the certificate
