Music to their ears: Wayne State Audiology Clinic partners with MusiCares to support Detroit musicians

The home of the Motown sound, Detroit's vibrant music scene thrives on the dedication and talent of its musicians. But for many, access to essential healthcare, including hearing services, can be a challenge.

Recognizing this need, Wayne State University’s Audiology Clinic is proud to announce a new partnership with MusiCares, a partner of the Recording Academy, to provide critical hearing evaluations and support to Detroit's music community.

"Musicians are often at risk for hearing loss due to exposure to loud music and noise," said Mary Kassa, Au.D., a clinical audiologist at Henry Ford Health and coordinator of Wayne State’s audiology program. "This partnership allows us to offer free, comprehensive hearing evaluations and personalized recommendations to help them protect their hearing and continue creating the music we love."

MusiCares provides a safety net for music professionals facing health challenges, offering financial, medical and addiction recovery services. With this new partnership, eligible MusiCares recipients in the Detroit area will have access to the Wayne State Audiology Clinic's state-of-the-art facilities and expertise.

Additionally, WSU audiology students will have expanded opportunities to learn from and work alongside audiology professionals, gaining valuable insights into the specific needs of the music industry.

"This partnership is a win-win for everyone," said Kassa. "MusiCares can expand its reach and support to Detroit's music community by referring patients to the WSU audiology clinic, and musicians coming directly to the audiology clinic can be referred to MusiCares for additional services to provide holistic support for their wellbeing. Additionally, our students gain valuable experience regarding hearing conservation and will have the opportunity to contribute to the well-being of these incredible artists. Ultimately, it's about ensuring Detroit's music scene continues to thrive with healthy and empowered musicians."
