Professional of the Year Award
Wayne State congratulates Dr. Derek Daniels on receiving the National Stuttering Association's (NSA) 2023 Professional of the Year Award! This award is given annually to a professional for their outstanding service and contributions to the NSA and the stuttering community.
Dr. Daniels is widely recognized for his research on barriers faced by marginalized groups and was recently invited to share on intersectionality and stuttering at the “Stammering Pride Against Prejudice” conference in London, England. Daniels also joined WUNC North Carolina Public Radio to discuss his research and personal experience regarding stuttering in African American and LGBTQ communities.
New chair of the American Tinnitus Association
The American Tinnitus Association (ATA) has elected Jinsheng Zhang, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders as the new chair of its board of directors. With decades of experience in tinnitus research and work with the ATA, Zhang aims to assist with the proactive recruitment of scientists to the field of tinnitus and engage more researchers in ATA grant opportunities that will spur progress toward more effective treatments and cures.

Erika Squires
Erika is the new clinically certified speech-language pathologist and 2022 Wayne State Ph.D. grad.
Her research focuses on cognitive-linguistic processing among people with hearing loss and diagnostic and intervention strategies for people who are deaf and hard of hearing.
Aaron Hardy-Smith
Aaron is the new assistant clinical professor who earned her B.S. and M.A. in Speech-Language Pathology from Western Michigan University. Her professional interests include serving preschool-school-age children with speech and language impairments, culturally responsive practices and mentoring early career professionals and leaders.
Congrats and farewell
Keri Morgan
Former clinical instructor Keri Morgan is moving to new ventures beyond Wayne State. Keri was a clinical assistant professor on the pediatric team where she provided clinical supervision and education through the head start and outpatient teams. Keri also taught the "Language and Phonological Disorders" course as part of our undergraduate curriculum and served as the chair of the department’s assessment and DEI committees.
