Audiology clinical education objectives

Semester one: WSU clinic

  1. Demonstrate ability to perform biologic checks of all equipment and troubleshoot as needed.
  2. Demonstrate ability to obtain a complete case history.
  3. Demonstrate ability to perform an otoscopic examination.
  4. Demonstrate ability to perform tympanometry.
  5. Demonstrate ability to perform acoustic reflex testing.
  6. Demonstrate ability to obtain unmasked air-conduction thresholds.
  7. Demonstrate ability to obtain unmasked bone-conduction thresholds.
  8. Demonstrate ability to obtain speech recognition thresholds.
  9. Demonstrate ability to perform recorded word recognition testing.

Semester two: WSU clinic

  1. Demonstrate ability to obtain a complete case history from a patient in five minutes or fewer.
  2. Demonstrate ability to perform an otoscopic examination in one minute or less.
  3. Demonstrate ability to perform tympanometry and acoustic reflex testing in eight minutes or fewer.
  4. Demonstrate ability to obtain unmasked air-conduction thresholds at 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 kHz in 10 minutes or fewer.
  5. Demonstrate ability to obtain unmasked bone-conduction thresholds at 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz in eight minutes or fewer.
  6. Demonstrate ability to perform speech audiometric testing in five minutes or fewer.
  7. Demonstrate ability to obtain masked bone-conduction thresholds.
  8. Demonstrate ability to obtain masked air-conduction thresholds.
  9. Demonstrate ability to provide an interpretation of hearing function based on results.
  10. Demonstrate ability to provide a written description of hearing test results.
  11. Demonstrate ability to formulate recommendations based on test results.

Semester three: WSU clinic and Henry Ford

  1. Demonstrate ability to counsel the patient regarding results and recommendations.
  2. Demonstrate ability to perform a complete hearing test (case history, otoscopic examination, immittance, air- and bone-conduction thresholds, and counseling) on an average adult patient in less than 35 minutes.
  3. Demonstrate ability to perform otoacoustic emissions testing.

  4. Demonstrate ability to perform a Weber tests using audiometric equipment and interpret results.
  5. Demonstrate ability to perform a Stenger test and interpret results.

Semester four: Henry Ford

  2. Demonstrate ability to perform a diagnostic ABR on an adult patient.
  3. Demonstrate ability to perform electrocochleography on an adult patient.
  4. Demonstrate ability to prepare an infant patient for ABR testing.
  5. Demonstrate ability to screen hearing on an infant patient using ABR.
  6. Demonstrate ability to determine the hearing threshold on an infant patient using ABR.
  7. Demonstrate ability to perform cleaning of a hearing aid and basic troubleshooting.
  8. Demonstrate ability to obtain ear impressions.
  9. Demonstrate ability to order correct hearing aids.
  10. Demonstrate ability to provide written reports on observed hearing aid sessions.
  11. Demonstrate ability to perform hearing aid programming.
  12. Demonstrate ability to real-ear measures

  1. Demonstrate ability to perform a hearing aid delivery and orientation in 60 minutes or fewer
    1. Real-ear measurements.

    3. Adjustments and programming as needed.
    4. Written reporting.
  2. Demonstrate ability to perform a hearing aid selection in 60 minutes or fewer
    1. Determine patient needs.
    2. Baseline hearing handicap or other measures (ANL, COSI, HHIE, etc).
    3. Formulation of recommendations.
    4. Patient education and counseling.
    5. Ordering appropriate aid(s) and ear impressions as needed.
    6. Written reporting.
  3. Demonstrate ability to perform a hearing aid check-in 30 minutes or fewer
