Academic year: 2021-2022

Learning outcome three

The student will be able to describe and evaluate the effects of language and culture on normal and disordered communication skills.

Assessment method

Scores from the SLP 6460: Language and Phonological Disorders course “Cultural Competency Reflection Paper" were evaluated. Twenty-five percent of the fall and winter 2021-2022 student papers were reviewed through random sampling. Data was collected by the SLP 6460 course instructor Mrs. Keri Morgan. The papers were evaluated by the course instructor. Scores ranged from 26-30 points based upon the rubric formulated. The criteria for acceptable performance would be a score of 26 or higher for 80% of those papers evaluated. The grading rubric was modified for the 2021/2022 year to place more point value on the research aspect of the assignment.

Results

Learning outcome met. Results of the assessment revealed that 13/13 students assessed scored at the developed level. (Compiled by Keri Morgan).

Learning outcome seven

Apply knowledge from CSD coursework to the clinical process for clinical cases.

Assessment method

Students will apply knowledge from current and past CSD coursework to clinical processes for two cases provided by the course instructors. The activity used for this learning outcome was a problem-based learning project that was completed in SLP 5360, which is the capstone for the undergraduate CSD program. The project was designed to evaluate writing skills, critical thinking, clinical application and research abilities. The following instructors who share the course gathered the data: Karen O’Leary, Tausha Moore and Nan Liening. Tausha Moore scored and evaluated the data. The evaluation scale was 1-4 (4 being highest). The criterion for acceptable performance was a score of 4 (85-100%) for 80% of those papers evaluated. Tausha Moore reviewed the results at the end of each semester.

Results

Learning outcome met. The review of the data was completed on 100% of fall 2021 and 100% of winter 2022 semester projects for the SLP 5360 course. This was equivalent to eight projects reviewed for fall 21 and 13 projects reviewed for winter 22 for a total of 21 projects. The results from the projects indicated that 100% of the student's projects were at the developed level and demonstrated a mastery level of skills 85-95% of the time (with a range of 90-98%). (Compiled by Tausha Moore).

Learning outcome seven

Apply knowledge from CSD coursework to the clinical process for clinical cases.

Assessment method

(This was a modified assessment method this year that focused more on the production of clinical documentation). Students will apply knowledge from CSD coursework to clinical processes for clients with communication disorders in the WSU Speech and Language Clinics on campus. Students provided an interpretation of evaluation findings and produced clinical documentation to reflect client goals, procedures and outcomes. This client-based learning project was designed to assess writing skills, critical thinking, clinical application and research abilities. The instructors who share the course gathered the data. The evaluation scale was based on points received for client-based assignments throughout the semester. The criterion for acceptable performance was a total score of 85-100% for 80% of those documents evaluated. One of the course instructors reviewed the results at the end of every semester.

Results

Learning outcome not met: Data from 100% of fall 2023 and 100% of winter 2024 of students who took the SLP 5360 course was reviewed. There were a total of 10 students enrolled in fall 2023 and 14 students enrolled in winter 2024 for a total of 24 students. A review of the data indicated that 75% of students achieved a total score of 85-100% on course activities developed to assess writing skills, critical thinking, clinical application and research abilities. Student scores ranged from 69.3-96.7%. (Compiled by Sydney Bojrab and Nan Liening).
