Bachelor of Arts in Biological Sciences

Wayne State's Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Biological Sciences provides students with a broad understanding of the principles of biology while allowing flexibility to explore interests beyond the natural sciences. This interdisciplinary program combines foundational coursework in biology, chemistry and mathematics with opportunities to integrate studies in humanities, social sciences and other liberal arts fields. It is ideal for students seeking a well-rounded education that connects biology to societal, ethical and cultural contexts.

Designed for those interested in careers that merge biology with areas such as education, communication, law or policy, our B.A. program emphasizes critical thinking, communication and interdisciplinary approaches. Students graduate with the knowledge and skills to pursue diverse career paths or advanced studies in fields like science writing, environmental policy or public health.

Why Wayne State's biological sciences major?

  • Gain real-world, hands-on experience with peers and faculty
  • Networking and mentorship opportunities with distinguished biological researchers and scholars
  • Build the foundational knowledge and undergraduate credentials to enter professions beyond biology

The B.A. in Biological Sciences offers greater flexibility than the Bachelor of Science for students who want to combine biology with non-science interests or pursue interdisciplinary careers, such as science writing or communication, science policy or law, education or business roles in biotech industries. The B.A. is not recommended for students anticipating admission into graduate science programs or medical school.
