Ted Roberts, anthropology alumni speaker talk

Ted Roberts earned his B.A. in anthropology from Wayne State University in 2002. A professional archaeologist, Ted holds an M.A. in Anthropology from Northern Arizona University. Ted is the Principal of PaleoWest Archaeology's New York City office located in northern Manhattan.

On October 14, 2015, at 4:00 p.m. in the Undergraduate Library's Bernath Auditorium, Ted Roberts will give his talk titled "Consultant Archaeology Today: A View From Southern California and New York City" will discuss Cultural Resource Management. Cultural resource management (CRM) is often viewed as a homogeneous subset of archaeology. CRM actually comprises many different fields, roles, institutions, goals, agendas, and practices, however, and in this discussion, I'll be presenting a view of CRM from the private sector (consultant) perspective.

To do so, I'll present two contrasting case studies from both of our coasts. The first is a large project focused on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility evaluations of 731 archaeological sites at Fort Irwin, in the Mojave Desert of southern California. The second is an investigation of the impacts that the removal of four Korean War-era buildings had on the archaeological deposits at Gateway National Recreation Area, Jamaica Bay Unit, in Brooklyn, New York City. I'll share the parameters of the projects and how they reflect current CRM law and practice.
