Spring/summer online course: ANT 5260 The African Religious Experience: A Triple Heritage

A triple heritage has contributed to the shaping of lives of African descent: the indigenous, Islamic and Christian religions.

In this course, we will explore the nature and structure, systems of beliefs, myths, symbols and rituals developed by African societies to express their distinctive worldviews. We will examine various perspectives on African religions, and the encounter of African people with foreign (Christianity and Islam) religions and the impact of these religions on African beliefs.

We will then explore the influence of African religions in Diaspora, e.g. Santeria, Voodoo and other practices found in the Diaspora.
