A message from Dean Hartwell
Dear CLAS Alumni,
In my second year now, I am officially a sophomore dean. Thus, the real work begins. With the welcoming of Public Health, CLAS is now 20 departments strong. Last year all of our departments worked mightily to pivot themselves outward-facing towards Detroit. This year we are working to assure that 100 percent of CLAS undergraduate students have access to internships or undergraduate research experiences.
Faculty in the humanities and social sciences are participating in a grant writing workshop while the college's Faculty Council is working with students on creating access to online syllabi and course descriptions. The council has also expressed an interest in taking the lead on college climate and diversity issues, which is wonderful.
Our students are as lively as ever. I am excited to meet CLAS student-athletes at an upcoming ice cream social and work with the Student Senate on their great ideas such as increasing voter registration on campus.
I am happy to be working with our energized faculty and staff to think creatively about our challenges. It is a great time to be at WSU. It is a great time to be in Detroit. I always enjoy meeting with alumni, so come for a visit and we will give you a tour of our CLAS museums and exhibits. President Wilson was just here doing the same. CLAS - a lot to see and a lot to do! My sleeves are always rolled up.
Sincerely,
Dean Steffi Hartwell, Ph.D.
