Scholarships and financial aid

The annual Wayne State University Scholarship Application period runs from Oct. 1 through March 1. Applicants will be considered for the scholarships listed below, as well as the scholarships available throughout the university, by using just one application.

Departmental scholarships

Mark and Arlene Christensen Endowed Scholarship for Math and Science Students

This fund is established to recognize scholastic achievement, encourage continued progress in math and the sciences, and to assist students in financing their education at Wayne State University. Applicants can be full or part-time students majoring in mathematics and/or another science discipline at Wayne State. Freshman or incoming students who have not formally declared a major but show evidence of outstanding performance in math and science at the high school level are also eligible to apply. A minimum of 3.0 GPA is required.

Anna K. Lewenz Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship fund is established to recognize scholastic achievement, encourage continued progress and provide assistance to students in financing their education in the Department of Mathematics in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Full or part-time junior or senior-status undergraduate students majoring in the Department of Mathematics will be eligible for this scholarship. Students must be members of the Association of Women in Mathematics to qualify for this scholarship. A minimum of 3.4 GPA is required. Applicants need not demonstrate financial need.

David DeLiso Memorial Annual Scholarship

It is the intention of the donor to give $1,000 per year to a deserving student. This scholarship is established to recognize scholastic achievement, encourage continued progress and provide assistance to students in financing their education in the Department of Mathematics. Full-time or part-time undergraduate students enrolled in the Department of Mathematics will be given preference. A minimum of 3.0 GPA is required. Applicants must demonstrate financial need. Recipients may use the award for tuition only.

Department of Mathematics Undergraduate Scholarship

Awarded to undergraduate students majoring in mathematics or math education and to participants in the Emerging Scholars Program.

Jim Veneri Memorial Scholarship in Mathematics

Full-time and part-time graduate and undergraduate students majoring in mathematics will be given preference. No minimum GPA is required, though scholastic excellence will be a favorable consideration. Applicants need not demonstrate financial need, though demonstrated financial need will be a favorable consideration. Recipients may use awards for tuition and other educational expenses.

Karl W. Folley and Helen Folley Endowed Mathematics Memorial Fund

This endowed scholarship is awarded to part-time or full-time undergraduate or graduate students of Wayne State University or to students accepted for study at Wayne State University majoring in Mathematics. Recipients are selected on the basis of scholastic achievement, qualities of leadership and financial need. The award is renewable provided recipients maintain a 3.0 GPA.

Leon Brown, Ph.D. and Joyce Brown, J.D. Endowed Undergraduate Scholarship in Mathematics

This scholarship recognizes scholastic achievement, encourages continued progress, and provides assistance to students in financing their education in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Applications are accepted from full-time or part-time undergraduate students majoring in Mathematics. Recipients are selected on the basis of academic performance. Financial need, as determined by the Department of Mathematics, is also taken into consideration. Awards may be used for tuition and other educational expenses.

M.F. Janowitz Fund

This award is intended to support academically gifted students studying a currently unfashionable branch of mathematics.

Maurice J. Zelonka Endowed Scholarship

The purpose of the scholarship fund is to provide an endowed, need-based scholarship fund for a graduate student or student(s) pursuing degrees in the fields of mathematics or statistics.

Outstanding Undergraduate Award

Awarded to honor an outstanding undergraduate for both academic achievement and contributions to the academic life of the Department of Mathematics. Undergraduate students majoring in mathematics and graduating within the current academic year are eligible.

Professor Max Coral Endowed Student Prize

This prize honors a distinguished student in the Department of Mathematics and awards a small prize each year. Full-time or part-time graduate or undergraduate students majoring in Mathematics are eligible. A minimum GPA is not required. Applicants need not demonstrate financial need. Recipients may use this award for tuition and other educational expenses.

Robert and Nancy Irvan Endowed Scholarship in Mathematics

This scholarship recognizes scholastic achievement, encourages continued progress, and provides assistance to students in financing their education in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. A 3.0 GPA is required. Applications are accepted from full-time or part-time graduates or undergraduates who have achieved junior or senior status and are majoring in mathematics. Financial need may be used as consideration for selecting recipients of this award at the discretion of the Department of Mathematics. Awards may be used for tuition and other educational expenses.
