In memoriam: Amanda Hoover

Amanda HooverThe Department of History extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of doctoral candidate Amanda Hoover.

Amanda joined the Wayne State history department in 2013 with a master's degree from Eastern Kentucky University and a deep interest in questions of material culture, education, and citizenship. A winner of the department's Alfred H. Kelly Award, Amanda researched the curricula and leadership of federal Indian schools in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to explore how the U.S. government envisioned a future for Native Americans as producers, consumers, and citizens.

Independent, intellectually curious, and unfailingly considerate of others, Amanda shared her talents as a teacher with Wayne State undergraduates in lively class discussions.

To Amanda, the work mattered. Her determination and sense of purpose-inspired her teachers, students, colleagues, and friends, and she will be greatly missed.
