History students win multiple awards in research and teaching

On April 11, the department had the honor and pleasure of recognizing our wonderful students for their excellent research and teaching. We handed out our traditional roster of awards as well as some new ones, thanks to the generosity of our donors.

Joe L. Norris Award

Meghan McGowan won for her research on African American students' fight against segregation in Detroit Public Schools.

Richard D. Miles Award

Nathaniel Arndts won for his research on Nazi efforts to control Jewish-German citizens during the Third Reich.

Rolf and Jennie Johannesen Memorial Award

Douglas Merriman won for his research on the decline of the Roman Imperial Army.

History Faculty Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award

Nathan Kuehnl won for excellence in teaching.

Gerald R. Dreslinski Research Award

Michael Vollbach will use this award to travel to Harvard University and the American Philosophical Society of Philadelphia to research Native American material culture and oral traditions.

Michael D. Patterson Memorial Award

Samuel Hogsette & Kimberly Steele won this award to travel to their respective archival sites. Hogsette will go to the Chicago History Museum & Carter G. Woodson Library to research Black Panther turned Congressman Bobby Rush. Steele will travel to three different Illinois Regional Archive Depositories to study unfree laborers in early America.

Charles F. Otis and Jeffrey L. Reider Scholarship

Christine Cook will travel to Washington, D.C., to visit the Army Heritage Education Center, Library of Congress, and Women's Memorial Library for her research on women in the military during the Cold War.

Alfred H. Kelly Memorial Award

Amanda Hoover will use this award to travel to Kansas City, MO, for her on research compulsory education for Native American children.

Thomas Bonner Memorial Research Award

Lily Wilson Szlaga and Nicholas Garlinghouse won this award to travel to their research sites. Szlaga will be heading to the Smithsonian's Freer Gallery to research Charles Lang Freer. Garlinghouse will also be traveling to the District, to the Mattachine Society and the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance, for his research on the fight for LGBT rights in Michigan.

Ph.D. student Amanda Walter won a 2017 Summer Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship from the Graduate School.
