History professor Kidada E. Williams discusses the pillaging of African-American freedom

Dr. Kidada Williams discusses making an account for the pillaging of African-American freedom in a new op-ed for the New York Times.

Dr. Williams wrote: "Most Americans today think that when the Confederate and Union armies stopped fighting, the hostilities of the Civil War ended. They did not. White supremacist violence undermined African-American freedom for the next decade. Accounting for this violence, understanding citizens' and elected officials' roles in it, and appreciating its consequences is vital for understanding the failings of Reconstruction."
