Professor renée c. hoogland receives President's Award
Associate Professor, renée c. hoogland, has received a 2014 President's Award for Excellence in Teaching. The President's Awards for Excellence in Teaching recognize faculty members who have made outstanding contributions to teaching.
This year there are four awards. Since 1977, 238 Wayne State University faculty members have been recognized for their teaching with these awards.
Dr. hoogland received her award at the WSU Academic Recognition Ceremony on Apr. 24, 2014.
Professor renée c. hoogland brings a command of her subject to a class, but she is also committed to student engagement through a discussion format that consistently receives high praise from students. Her gift for teaching makes her as adept at explaining literary history and theory in introductory classes as she is at guiding seniors and graduate students in the complexities of textual, media and cultural analysis.
Professor hoogland is always working to improve her syllabi and course material, even in classes, she has taught multiple times. She takes advantage of diverse cultural sites and activities in Detroit by incorporating at least one field trip to a local museum, gallery, or theatre.
She has demonstrated leadership in advancing visual culture studies in the department through both participating in the development of a new curriculum and by confronting traditional views of the field of English by incorporating film, photography, fine arts and new media.
Students praise hoogland's dedication to teaching and have a great appreciation for the encouragement that she gives them while tackling challenging material.
