Liebler wins Michigan Outstanding Humanities Supporter award

Wayne State University English Lecturer M.L Liebler received a Michigan Humanities Award last month. "M.L. Liebler is an internationally known and widely published Detroit poet, university professor, literary arts activist and arts organizer," states the Michigan Humanities organization in an announcement.

Liebler won the Outstanding Humanities Supporters Individual Award for the many literary organizations that he has founded and directed in the area. Some of these organizations include The Midtown Detroit Literary Walk, the National Writer's Voice Project of Detroit, and the YMCA Arts & Humanities Initiative. As well as being involved with these organizations, Liebler serves as the Poet Laureate of St. Clair Shores.

Liebler has played a significant role in establishing Detroit's literary community. Having taught at WSU since 1980, his research interests include creative writing, Detroit studies and world fiction.

The author of several works, his latest novel, Working Words: Punching the Clock and Kicking Out the Jams, is a compilation of poetry and short stories for and about the working class.

The Michigan Humanities Awards recognize and celebrate individuals and organizations that lead, educate, and are an advocate for humanities in Michigan. Detroit Public Television will air the award show at 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14.
