English professor appointed to WSU Academy of Scholars

Ljiljana Progovac, professor, has been appointed to the WSU Academy of Scholars. Membership in the Academy of Scholars confers the most prestigious recognition of scholarly excellence at Wayne State, and Professor Progovac's outstanding and field-defining work amply merits this acknowledgment.

A specialist in theoretical syntax, Professor Progovac has recently focused on the evolutionary origins of language. Bridging the fields of evolutionary biology, neuroscience, genetics, and linguistics, Professor Progovac has identified evidence of linguistic evolution that went hand in hand with biological evolution. This discovery has far-reaching consequences for our understanding of evolutionary processes and the history of language.
