DeRoy Lecture: Professor Denilson Lopes
On Friday, Nov. 30, at 4 p.m., the English department will host a DeRoy Lecture by Profesor Denilson Lopes, of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, on the topic of "Affects, Relations and Encounters."
With a bachelor's degree in Journalism and Communication (1989), a master's in literature (1992) and a Ph.D. in sociology(1997), all from the University of Brasília, Denilson Lopes is currently a tenured associate professor at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, with a research grant from the Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa. He has experience in the area of communication, with an emphasis on aesthetics of communication, and also works on contemporary cinema, gender studies (gay and transgender studies), cultural criticism and contemporary art, cultural studies, and comparative literature.
He is the author of No Coração do Mundo: Paisagens Transculturais (Rio de Janeiro: Rocco, 2012), A Delicadeza: Estética, Experiência e Paisagens (Brasília, EdUnB, 2007), O Homem que Amava Rapazes e Outros Ensaios (Rio de Janeiro, Aeroplano, 2002) and Nós os Mortos: Melancolia e Neo-Barroco (Rio de Janeiro, 7Letras, 1999). He is co-editor of Silviano Santiago y los Estudios Latinoamericanos (Pittsburgh: Iberoamerciana, 2014) of Imagem e Diversidade Sexual (São Paulo, Nojosa, 2004), Cinema, Globalização e Interculturalidade (Chapecó, Argos, 2010) and editor of O Cinema dos Anos 90 (Chapecó, Argos, 2005).
At the moment he is finishing a new book on contemporary Brazilian cinema related to his project "Affects, Relations and Encounters." He is going to start a new comparative and transcultural project on dandyism and decadentism and their updating.
