Fall 2023: A message from Department Chair, Dr. Brad Smith

Dear alumni and friends of the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice,

Our new academic year is well underway, and things are off to a great start! As you may have heard, the university has one of its largest freshman classes, and the criminology and criminal justice (CCJ) department had one of the most significant increases in freshman in the university. We are very excited to welcome so many new students and we have many initiatives underway to welcome and engage them. For Halloween, students are decorating the hallways, faculty and staff will be handing out candy from their offices, and we will be having a raffle for students. The idea, proposed by our students, was so popular that most of the departments in our building decided to join in, and the dean herself is bringing her staff to the building! I hope you’ll take a moment to check out some of the other new things in the department, including our two newest professors.

As always, I love hearing from alumni who are creating change in their communities, who have career news to share, or who would like to be more involved with the department. Please get in touch with me at bradsmith@wayne.edu. Finally, thank you to those of you who are donating to the department. Your investment in our work is a powerful vote of confidence and I appreciate it. And if you’re considering a gift to the department, visit go.wayne.edu/give-ccj. Thank you and have a wonderful fall.

Sincerely,

Brad Smith
Professor and Department Chair
