Meet Sean Sims, c/o 2013
Why did you choose sociology as your major?
I chose sociology as my major to further my career in human services, as well as to broaden my world perspective and to give me a solid, yet diverse educational foundation.
Where are you currently working or attending graduate school?
Currently, I work for the State of Michigan in the Workforce Development Agency as a Disabled Veterans' Outreach Program Specialist. I am also attending graduate school at Wayne State University where I am pursuing a Master's in Social Work with a focus on policy administration.
How have you used your sociology courses/background in the real world?
My sociology background helps me to better understand the world: news reports, data and research. It has been an invaluable tool in my graduate school coursework and it enables me to conduct research and gather relevant data in the realms of veteran issues, economic development and grant proposal development.
What is some advice you can offer to future/current students?
Put your whole effort into your studies. Time really flies, whether you're having fun or not. So, set aside regular study time and stick to it. Read your textbook prior to attending class and get your assignments in as early as possible. This will keep you on track, ahead of the crowd and minimize unnecessary stress. This will allow you extra time to pick your professor's brain, so you can perfect your work. It frees your mind to explore different concepts and gives you a chance to be creative.
The hard work is very worth your effort. A degree in sociology is one of the most versatile degrees to have. It can get your foot in the door at many companies and is not so specialized that you are limited in the areas of career opportunities that are available to you.
The world truly is yours... A degree in sociology can help you make the most of it!
