Meet Rola Bazzi-Gates, Ph.D. candidate

Why did you choose sociology as your major?

I chose sociology as my major to supply me with the skills and prepare me for the real world. It is a valuable and important degree. This discipline broadened my horizons and improved my skills and knowledge. I earned my B.A. in Liberal Arts, major sociology and my master degree in social work (MSW) from WSU. Sociology prepared me for a productive career, empowered my life as a citizen and a leader in a rapidly changing world.

Where are you currently working or attending graduate school?

I am currently a Ph.D. candidate at WSU in the sociology department. I recently defended my dissertation proposal successfully. I am working on collecting data and writing my dissertation. I will graduate with my Ph.D. in August 2015.

Also, I am enrolled at WSU in the education department completing my Education Specialist Certification in general administration and concentration in special education. I will graduate in June 2016.

In my current job as a school social worker for the last 17 years with Dearborn Public Schools and in my personal life as a parent,  I use on daily basis my unique skills and experiences to benefit and help all students, parents and staff. In 2006, I won from my school district The Outstanding Ancillary Employee of the Year. In 2011, I won School Social Worker of the Year from MASSW Region A. I am proud to say that I lead a productive and innovative life built on critical reasoning, creativity, communication skills, ethical capacities and respect for human diversity.

How have you used your sociology courses/background in the real world?

Sociology taught me to think and analyze things critically. Learning about a variety of sociological theories, social problems and social inequality gave me a background in how to consider a variety of different viewpoints, recognize and solve problems.

Why WSU?

I am glad that I chose WSU for all my four degrees because WSU is a premier research institution in the real-world education!
