Major

Sociology and gender, sexuality and women's studies alumna with a Minor in Art.

Why did you choose sociology as your major?

I chose to major in sociology because I felt it gave me a better understanding of society and oppression that surrounds many individuals within our own communities, country, and around the world. Sociology is a broad major regardless of the career path you wish to take. I feel that it enhances employability, career options, and graduate school acceptance because the skills you are gaining are invaluable. Along the way I gained important skills and qualities that laid a foundation for my life as a productive member of society and my career path as a social worker; logical thinking and reasoning, critical evaluation, problem-solving, research strategies, data analysis, leadership, communication and interpersonal skills, respect for human diversity, a cross-cultural understanding, and an awareness of inequalities that exist.

Where are you currently/studying and working, and what are your future goals?

Currently, I am pursuing an AM degree (equivalent to a master's in social work) with a clinical concentration at the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration. My career goals are quite broad and I am very open to whatever comes my way! My hope is to work with one of the multiple public, private, or governmental agencies that focus on combating human trafficking, sexual, and physical violence against women. This could be through direct clinical work with victims/survivors, advocacy (community, medical, legal), or prevention and education.

How have you used your sociology courses/background in the real world?

The courses really taught me to critically think and analyze the society and world in which we live in, so I do. I truly think that this makes for a more self-aware, well-rounded, diverse, and empathetic person. I have noticed a lot of cross-over with material and information in my graduate social work program. The sociology classes were interesting, useful, relatable, interactive, and something applicable to our everyday lives and careers.

What is some advice you can offer to future and current undergraduate sociology students?

I recommend sociology for anyone and everyone! The knowledge gained from sociology courses can be applied to any career choice and in everyday life. You will most enjoy it if you are interested in society, social relationships, social institutions or social issues (e.g., sex/gender, race, religion, health, families, crime/violence, workplace, poverty, etc). I especially recommend it for anyone in the social service field (social workers, counselors, healthcare providers, teachers, field of law, etc).
