Meet Joumana Amine, c/o 2014
Why did you choose sociology as your major?
I enjoyed understanding the way different groups interact as well as the social behaviors within certain organizations. It is a subject that is definitely applicable to everyday living, which is something we can all appreciate as students.
Where are you currently working?
I am currently working at Ford Motor Company as a human resources associate.
How have you used your sociology courses/background in the "real world?”
Within human resources, I mainly focus on the cooperative education program as well as the Summer Interns for Product Development Engineers. I’ve applied sociological aspects within these two groups by observing the way each interacts, specifically within different age groups. It’s important to be cognizant of where the students/employees come from.
What is some advice you can offer to future and current undergraduate sociology students?
Because sociology doesn’t have a set career path, you are able to apply yourself within any work environment and adapt the way I have in the business world. I would advise current undergraduate sociology students to intern or observe other professionals, to gain as much knowledge as they can on the opportunities that are out there, while also gaining experience.
