Sociology faculty receive 2022 university awards
Congratulations to Dr. Zachary Brewster, Heather Dillaway, and Lauren Duquette-Rury for winning the 2022 university awards.
Dr. Zachary Brewster: 2022 President's Award for Excellence in Teaching
"There really is no way that I can overstate the profound impact that Dr. Brewster has had on my career. His persistent presence in my life really speaks to the overarching theme of this letter of recommendation. If he had never offered me a single moment of his time outside of the classroom, he would still be well-deserving of a President's Award for Excellence in Teaching. However, Dr. Brewster is so much more than a classroom instructor to his students - he's a supporter and a role model whose training is not confined to a three-hour session."

Dr. Heather Dillaway: 2022 Distinguished Graduate Faculty Award
"I am only one of the many who will sing Heather's praises. Her efforts and commitment to her students, the department, the college, and the university are remarkable. What is even more remarkable is being able to personally witness how one person successfully manages her many roles: mother, partner, daughter, sister, friend, mentor, professor, sociologist, associate dean, and so on.
Heather has shown me and countless others what balancing motherhood/other mothering/foster-mothering, career, and service can look like-that it may be challenging, but that it can be done. In my mind the honor of "distinguished" goes beyond the recitation of one's curriculum vita: how has the person been of service to others; how has the person used their position and privileges to help others realize their potential? Dr. Heather Dillaway is truly a distinguished graduate faculty member."

Dr. Lauren Duquette-Rury: 2022 Career Development Chair Award
"'Rising star' is a label so frequently used in recommendations that it diminishes its descriptive power. Yet that is exactly the status of Dr. Duquette-Rury in her and my subfield. She has published in the leading journals of sociology, international migration, development, and politics. Her first book, Exit and Voice (UC Press) received three major awards. Naturalizing under Threat, Dr. Duquette- Rury's manuscript in progress with Russell Sage, will change how we assess political membership. She is an accomplished and committed teacher, and mentor. Her perspectives on equity and inclusion are thoughtful and informed by personal and professional experience."
