Krista Brumley wins Warrior of Distinction Award

Krista BrumleyThe Department of Sociology congratulates Dr. Krista Brumley on receiving the President's Commission on the Status of Women (COSW) 2023 Warrior of Distinction Employee Award.

This award recognizes Wayne State University employees who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to women and/or issues of diversity, equity and inclusion at Wayne State. Among other accomplishments, this award recognizes Dr. Brumley's work on the NSF funding for the Gender Equity Advances Retention in STEM (GEARS) project. This project seeks to affect transformational change in the work/family policies and culture of Wayne State through data collection, education, advocacy and programming.

As the principal investigator and public face of the GEARS project, Dr. Brumley has become the go-to person at Wayne State for issues relating the gender equity and work-life balance at Wayne State. Under her guidance, the GEARS project has launched numerous initiatives and provided much-needed training and support for faculty, staff and administrators to make Wayne State a model for how universities can ensure gender equity and provide an environment where women can thrive in their careers and find work-life balance.

The success of the GEARS project is due to Dr. Brumley's dogged determination and indefatigable efforts in advocating for women at Wayne State University. In short, advocating for gender equity at Wayne State is Dr. Brumley's full-time job.
