Department of Sociology alumna Anan Ameri to be inducted into Michigan Women's Hall of Fame

Anan AmeriThe Department of Sociology is always delighted to see the outstanding achievements of alumni. This fall, in East Lansing, MI, sociology alumna Anan Ameri, Ph.D. '81, will receive a lifetime achievement award from the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame.

A woman of many hats, Ameri has taken on a variety of challenges throughout her career. She has worked as an author, editor, educator, scholar, community organizer, world-renowned speaker, and notably, the director of the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn, MI.

Anyone who has visited the Arab American National Museum knows it's one of a kind. Ameri has played a vital role in the creation and development of this cultural landmark which houses premier exhibits, events, and educational outreach programs.

The museum stands as a symbol of local and international culture, and a hub for learning and diversity. As a visionary and leader, Ameri has paved the way for the long-lasting success of this local treasure and has served as an influential voice for Arab culture.

The Michigan Women's Hall of Fame is a part of the Michigan Women's Historical Center in Lansing, MI. Founded in 1973, the center is operated by the Michigan Women's Studies Association, a nonprofit organization. The Women's Historical Center has long stood as the only museum in Michigan solely dedicated to women's history and is just as unique as its hundreds of honorees.

The museum's Women's Hall of Fame was created in 1983 to honor the achievements of remarkable women with ties to the state of Michigan. It credits unique women who have shown bravery, leadership qualities, innovation and tenacity in their lives and industries.
