Psychology student spotlight: Anthony Kostecki

Our first student spotlight features Anthony Kostecki. Anthony is graduating this May with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in psychology honors, co-major in university honors and a minor in music; he is being inducted to the WSU chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, our nation's most prestigious honor society. Anthony provides us with a great example of how a student can get the most out of their time at WSU.

In his four years at Wayne State, he engaged in a wide-range of both social and scholarly activities. These out-of-classroom experiences helped to shape Anthony as a scholar, preparing him for the next step in his academic journey: a Ph.D. program in clinical psychology. Further, it's through these extra-curricular activities where he created lasting friendships and made a lot of amazing memories.

Anthony's advice to other students:
"Keep your eyes, ears, and most importantly, your mind open for a few reasons: 1) we're in a major city and you have to pay attention to things going on around you; 2) you have access to so many unique opportunities in Midtown and Detroit - take advantage of these opportunities that are right under your nose; 3) there are over 300 student orgs in which you can get involved in - or you can start your own - but you need to be engaged with your environment in order to actually discover these orgs. In other words, don't just go to class and go home, find reasons to stay on campus. Eventually, you won't even need to 'find reasons,' you'll just be on campus all the time, naturally!"

Campus involvement / student organizations:
Orientation leader, legacy leader, warrior zone leader, AAPSO treasurer, PASS program president and peer mentor, student representative on HLC accreditation committee, student speaker for Honors College, WSU choir (performing with orchestras, including the DSO twice!)

Research:

  • Dr. Annmarie Cano, Relationships and Health Lab - studying interpersonal processes in couples with pain.
  • Dr. Emily Grekin, College Alcohol Lab - studying common factors in e-intervention programs designed to reduce alcohol use in college students.
  • Volunteer:
Detroit Fellows Tutoring Program - tutored and mentored 3rd grade students at Gardner Elementary School in Detroit, helping them improve their reading abilities.

Teach4Detroit - assisted K-6 teachers at Dr. Charles Drew Academy in Detroit, providing individualized help to students in various classrooms.

    Plans after graduation:
Anthony was accepted into the clinical psychology Ph.D. program at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. His career goals include providing therapy, conducting research and also teaching and mentoring students.

    Hobbies / additional activities:
Singing, piano, studying/writing about music, yoga (especially Bikram)

Favorite part about the Department of Psychology:
Anthony says he absolutely loves all of the diversity that the Department of Psychology (as well as the university in general) has to offer; it taught him to value diversity within research.
