WSU’s Math Brigade program helps DPSCD students build confidence in the classroom

Now in its third year, the Math Brigade — a unique partnership between Wayne State’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) and Spain Elementary-Middle School — continues to give WSU students a hands-on way to support Detroit elementary students while sharpening their own academic and professional skills.

Launched in collaboration with the Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD), the Math Brigade places WSU tutors inside local classrooms to help elementary students in math and build one-on-one relationships that boost confidence and academic growth.

Isha Shah, a current intern and nutrition and food sciences student, began working with the Math Brigade at the end of 2024 and says the experience has been deeply rewarding.

“This has been one of the best experiences for me,” said Shah. “I enjoy working with kids and helping them with their schoolwork. I’ve learned how to teach students at different levels and explain things in different ways so they can understand better.”

“Learning about their lives on a personal level has helped me build stronger connections and become a better mentor,” said Shah. “It’s truly fulfilling to be a part of their growth, both inside and outside the classroom.”

The program has grown steadily since its launch, according to Math Brigade Director Rouba Daher.

“Since it started three years ago, the program has grown by offering more tutors to help students in third (through) eighth grade in math,” she said. “We have improved the teaching methods and tools to make learning easier. The program regularly gets feedback to make sure we are meeting students' needs, and we have provided tutors with more training to help them be more effective.”

Funded through CLAS internship support and coordinated through faculty and staff in the Department of Mathematics, the program continues to grow, with students from across the college participating each semester. CLAS created the internship as part of a broader initiative to support experiential learning across disciplines — a key component of Wayne State’s College-to-Career initiative.

“The Math Brigade represents everything we value in CLAS — community engagement, hands-on learning and true impact,” said Stephanie Hartwell, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

“We created this program to give our students the chance to apply what they’re learning in the classroom while making a real difference in the lives of Detroit students. Internships like this are not just resume builders; they’re transformative experiences that shape confident, compassionate professionals.”
