Wayne State Peregrine Falcons get a new perspective with two-camera system

Wayne State University’s Falcon Cam is soaring to new heights with an upgraded view, thanks to the addition of a second camera. Installed and supported by WSU’s Computing and Information Technology (C&IT) team, this new high-definition camera provides biologists and falcon fans with enhanced monitoring capabilities and a broader view of the nest atop Old Main.

Until now, the popular falcon cam only offered a south-facing perspective of the birds’ activities. With the second camera, viewers can now enjoy a fresh angle, capturing everything from peregrines Herman and Lillie’s courtship to chick-rearing antics in crystal-clear detail.

“C&IT is excited to back the installation of additional falcon camera technology at Old Main,” said Rob Thompson, WSU’s chief information officer. “This initiative not only enhances community engagement but also fosters pride in our beautiful campus and the feathered friends we share it with.”

The two-camera system is a major step forward for the WSU Falcons Team, who manage the project and rely on the footage to monitor the birds’ behavior. The enhanced setup also enriches the experience for falcon fans worldwide, who faithfully follow the birds' nesting season each year.

The Falcon Cam project launched in 2019 through a collaboration between the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) and a group of generous benefactors. It started with just one camera to help biologists monitor the birds, but has since grown to include a dedicated social media presence and a global community of viewers who tune in to watch the peregrines’ every move.

This year, the project takes another step forward with the launch of new WSU Falcons YouTube and Twitch channels, offering fans additional ways to follow Herman and Lillie’s story.

“This second camera angle is a great step forward in sharing this important Wayne State initiative,” said Mel Mills, senior digital strategist for CLAS and a key part of the project’s launch. “We’re excited to see it grow and continue to provide cool content.”
