Wayne State introduces AI course that blends philosophy and math
WSU is pushing the boundaries of classroom learning with a new interdisciplinary course, Artificial Intelligence and the Conscious Mind (PHI/MAT 1400), launching in Winter 2025. The in-person class, co-taught by Hengguang Li, professor and chair of the Department of Mathematics, and Philosophy Professor Eric Hiddleston, explores artificial intelligence through both mathematical and philosophical lenses.
“AI is transforming nearly every aspect of our lives,” said Li. “It’s crucial for everyone to develop a foundational understanding of its potential, its limitations and its ethical use.”
The course is designed for students of all backgrounds, making complex concepts like neural networks and machine learning approachable. “We’re focusing on the core ideas and presenting the material in a way that’s accessible—even for students without a strong math foundation,” Li said.
Going beyond the technical explanations, Hiddleston will guide students in examining the big questions: Can AI truly think? Could it ever be considered conscious? And how should society navigate the moral and ethical challenges that come with such technologies?
“No one really knows what consciousness or intelligence actually are,” Hiddleston said. “Philosophy helps us think about questions that don’t yet have clear answers. Those questions are critical when it comes to understanding AI.”
Ethical discussions will also play a central role. Hiddleston said students will explore both the risks of overestimating and underestimating AI’s capabilities. “Getting it just right is going to be incredibly difficult, and we need to start thinking about that now.”
The course reflects a larger effort at Wayne State to prepare students for the evolving landscape of technology and increasingly competitive careers.
“Developing this class has been a rewarding experience,” Li said. “AI raises profound scientific and societal questions and addressing them requires true interdisciplinary collaboration.”
