Remembering Paul Massaron

It is with great sadness that we share news of the recent passing of Paul Massaron, a distinguished member emeritus of Wayne State University's Board of Governors.

Paul MassaronPaul was twice elected by the voters of Michigan to serve on the board. He dedicated himself to advancing the mission of Wayne State with unwavering commitment. He served with distinction from 2001 to 2016. Paul was a tireless advocate for our university who was renowned for his exceptional negotiation skills and the ability to bring people together.

Before his time on the board, Paul had an impactful 32-year career with the UAW, where he excelled in labor relations, contract negotiations, arbitration and political action. He brought those skills to Wayne State, serving as chair of the board’s budget and finance and health affairs committees. His contributions were instrumental in shaping the university’s success and growth during his tenure.

In 2016, the WSU Board of Governors established the Paul E. Massaron Endowed Scholarship. This scholarship fund recognizes scholastic achievement, encourages continued progress and supports students in financing their education in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences’ Labor Studies program.

Following his service on the board, Paul remained a dedicated advocate and cherished friend of Wayne State. His legacy will endure and we will miss his ongoing contributions to the university and broader community.

Wayne State shares our profound gratitude for Paul's many years of service. We extend our deepest condolences to the Massaron family, including his son, David, who served as Wayne State’s chief business officer, CFO/senior vice president for finance and business operations and treasurer until December 2023.

For those wishing to pay their respects and honor Paul's legacy, in lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the university
