Journalist, alum Danny Fenster to take part in Citizenship & Constitution Day 2022
Wayne State University's Center for the Study of Citizenship, the Department of English, and City of Asylum/Detroit are honored to announce that Danny Fenster, formerly a journalist in Myanmar and currently a Nieman Journalism Fellow at Harvard University, will speak at Spencer Partrich Auditorium at 6 p.m. on Sept. 15.
In conversation with Creative Writing professor Donovan Hohn, Fenster will discuss his experiences in Myanmar, the growing global threat of authoritarian surveillance, and the imperiled role of journalists as truth-telling witnesses. Fenster holds an MA in English from Wayne State University. The program is free and open to the general public.
In addition to the Fenster event, City of Asylum/Detroit will host an evening of readings and conversation with four writers living in exile-poet Dmitry Bykov, cartoonist Pedro X. Molina, novelist Anouar Rahmani, and Pwaangulongii Dauod, who is this year an Artist Protection Fund Fellow in residence at Wayne State University's Department of English.
All four writers were forced to flee their homelands, and all four found safe haven in the United States with help from City of Asylum, an international arts nonprofit whose newest North American chapter recently opened in Detroit.
Part of a three-city tour celebrating solidarity among City of Asylum programs, this event is open to the general public. The event takes place at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16 at Trinosophes Cafe.
