Corvino receives Community Hero Award for work toward LGBTQ+ equality
In honor of his longstanding work for LGBTQ+ equality and to commemorate the 25th anniversary of his lecture "What's Morally Wrong with Homosexuality?" John Corvino, professor and chair of WSU's Department of Philosophy, received the inaugural Community Hero Award from Affirmations on Saturday, March 18.
This award recognizes inspirational leadership and commitment to advancing acceptance, equality and inclusion. Affirmations, an LGBTQ+ community center, wanted to honor Corvino's contributions and commitment to the movement.
"It was deeply moving to receive this award, and it gave me a moment to reflect on the last 25 years," said Corvino. "I am so grateful for the recognition, and I have been able to do this work because of the amazing web of support I have from so many people."
Corvino began presenting this lecture 25 years ago for a gay and lesbian awareness week at University of Texas. It quickly gained attention and Corvino was asked to travel the country to give the lecture as gay rights grew into a larger national issue.
