CLAS celebrates three new distinguished professors

The Wayne State Board of Governors appointed three new distinguished professors in CLAS this past summer: Antonia Abbey, Ljiljana Progovac and Sergei Voloshin.

Awarded by the president, the Distinguished Faculty Fellowship is granted to faculty demonstrating distinguished achievements in their discipline. Recipients are provided a title change to “distinguished professor” and a grant from WSU to support their scholarship. The university limits the number of these fellowships awarded for each call, and the process is competitive.

  • Distinguished Professor Antonia Abbey: “Toni” Abbey is a faculty member of the Department of Psychology. She initially joined the faculty in the Department of Community Medicine but transferred to psychology in 2006. She has developed global recognition for her research on the behavioral effects of alcohol use/abuse. She has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles, 20 book chapters, and numerous other published works. She is a co-author of the 2007 Sexual Experience Survey instrument. She has brought nearly $8 million in external funding to WSU. Further, she has an outstanding record of teaching and mentorship.
  • Distinguished Professor Ljiljana Progovac: Ljiljana Progovac is a faculty member of the Department of English. She is a professor of Linguistics with a specialization in theoretical syntax and one of the leading proponents for a gradualist view of language evolution. She has published five scholarly monographs, 19 chapters in edited collections, and over 30 peer-reviewed articles. Moreover, she has an excellent record of service and teaching and mentorship at WSU.
  • Distinguished Professor Sergei Voloshin: Sergei Voloshin is a faculty member of the Department of Physics and Astronomy. He is an internationally recognized leader in theoretical and experimental nuclear physics. During his time at WSU, he has been a prolific scholar, authoring and co-authoring nearly 800 publications. These publications have received over 110,000 citations on Google Scholar. His work on high-energy nuclear physics has led to approximately $9 million in grants. He is also an outstanding teacher and mentor within his department.

Please join us in congratulating our distinguished faculty.

The call for distinguished professor recommendations for the 24' - 25' academic year is currently open. Please submit recommendations to the CLAS Dean's Office by Dec. 1.
