Anthropology faculty share their favorite artifacts: Peru pottery
Leah Davis is a volunteer in the Gordon L. Grosscup Museum of Anthropology. She described her favorite artifact from the museum's collection.
What is the artifact?
This piece of pottery is from the Shipibo Indians in Peru.
Where is the artifact from?
Peru
Why is this artifact important?
The interesting detail is the recurring appearance, of possibly, the Christian cross. The frequency of that image could indicate influence from outsiders or could be a different cultures use of the same image.
Why is this your favorite artifact?
Its beauty, for me, lies in the hand painted image of a face on the neck of the vessel. I really like this piece because of its ability to create questions as well as its unique design.
