Doctoral student’s passion for mathematics drives research and education
Doctoral applied mathematics student Trang Nguyen is making strides in optimization, systems control, machine learning and variational analysis as a graduate teaching assistant in the Department of Mathematics at Wayne State University. Under the guidance of Professor Boris Mordukhovich, Nguyen’s research explores applications in mathematical biology, applied physics, mechanical and electrical engineering and data science.
Nguyen, who holds a master’s in applied mathematics from Wayne State, is nearing the completion of her Ph.D. Her academic journey has spanned multiple international institutions, including Sorbonne Paris Nord University and Limoges University in France, as well as Quy Nhon University in Vietnam, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics and education. This extensive background has provided Nguyen with a solid foundation and a global perspective on mathematical research.
Driven by a love for mathematics, Nguyen describes the field as one that reveals patterns, solves complex problems and bridges abstract theory with real-world applications. She views mathematics as more than problem-solving; it’s a pathway to understanding fundamental truths and making significant contributions across various disciplines. Nguyen emphasizes persistence as key to overcoming challenges, noting that perseverance is essential for growth and success in the field.
Throughout her Ph.D. journey, Nguyen has published four research papers in prominent journals, including "Applied Mathematics and Optimization," "IEEE Control Systems Letters" and the "Journal of Optimization Theory and Applications." She's submitted three additional papers and presented her findings at multiple academic conferences. Alongside her research, Nguyen has taught a range of courses, from introductory college algebra to advanced calculus and probability and statistics, showcasing her dedication to teaching the next generation of mathematicians.
Nguyen credits the strong support from Professor Mordukhovich and the Wayne State mathematics department faculty as instrumental in her development as a researcher and educator. This encouragement has fueled her commitment to an academic career, where she aims to continue making an impact through research and education.
