Wayne State Ph.D. candidate bridges theory and practice in applied mathematics
Doctoral applied mathematics student Trang Nguyen is making strides in optimization, systems control, machine learning and variational analysis as a graduate teaching assistant in the Department of Mathematics at Wayne State University.
Under the guidance of Professor Boris Mordukhovich, Nguyen’s research explores applications in mathematical biology, applied physics, mechanical and electrical engineering and data science. Nguyen shares her first-hand experience at Wayne State.
I am currently completing my Ph.D. at Wayne State University where I also earned a master's degree in applied mathematics. Before studying in the United States, I participated in international master's programs at Sorbonne Paris Nord University and also completed the Master 1 of ACSYON program from Limoges University, France. I obtained my bachelor's degree in mathematics and education from Quy Nhon University in Vietnam. This educational journey has equipped me with a strong foundation in mathematics and a comprehensive perspective on my field.
I view mathematics as a beautiful discipline, one that has the power to uncover patterns, solve complex problems and connect abstract theories with real-world applications. I find that the beauty of mathematics lies in its ability to provide clarity and insight into the complexities of the world around us. For me, doing mathematics is not just about solving equations; it's about understanding fundamental truths and using this understanding to make meaningful contributions to various fields.
I am passionate about exploring these connections and inspiring my students to discover the impact that mathematics can have. I acknowledge that mathematics can be challenging sometimes, even for experts in the field. However, I believe that everyone, no matter their level of expertise, encounters obstacles when tackling complex problems. For me, persistence is essential on this journey, stopping when things get difficult prevents growth, while consistent effort and perseverance will eventually lead to success.
I appreciate how the mathematics department offers the right combination of challenges and support, creating a space where students feel motivated and encouraged to do their best. Throughout my Ph.D. journey at Wayne State University, I have had opportunities to engage in extensive research, publishing four papers in reputable journals such as "Applied Mathematics and Optimization," "IEEE Control Systems Letters" and the "Journal of Optimization Theory and Applications," submitting three more papers to other journals and presenting my work at conferences.
Besides that, I have also taught many courses, from introductory like college algebra or elementary statistics to advanced levels such as calculus (I, II, III), probability and statistics in the Department of Mathematics. I have managed these responsibilities effectively, demonstrating my commitment to both advancing my field and educating the next generation of mathematicians. To achieve this, I have been fortunate to receive tremendous support and encouragement from my advisor, Professor Boris Mordukhovich and all the faculty and staff in the mathematics department.
This strong support has been a significant motivation and inspiration in my growth, strengthening my commitment to pursuing my academic career and contributing to the community.
