Wayne State establishes first Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) chapter

Wayne State University has established its first chapter of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), joining other noteworthy Michigan universities affiliated with the national organization. The new chapter will provide students with networking opportunities and professional development in applied mathematics.

Syed Shawzub Muhammad Raza, the chapter’s president, led the initiative to bring SIAM to Wayne State, along with fellow student Joseph Crachiola and Professor Fernando Charro.

"This chapter allows students to engage with industrial leaders and professionals while enhancing their mathematical skill sets," Raza said. "We are excited to create a platform that fosters professional growth and collaboration."

SIAM promotes the application of mathematics to industry and science through research and new problem-solving techniques. The Wayne State chapter aims to advance these principles by connecting students with industry professionals and researchers.

Building a community

Since its inception, the SIAM chapter has hosted events to engage students across disciplines. A January movie night featuring The Imitation Game drew more than 30 students from fields including mechanical engineering and psychology. The chapter has also promoted Student Math and Applications (SMAAS) events, which feature industry professionals and alumni discussing their careers and networking with students.

Looking ahead, SIAM will team up with the WSU Economics Club for a game night at the Michigan Science Center, while also securing funding for students to attend national SIAM conferences.

With faculty support and student engagement, the SIAM chapter is positioned to become an integral part of Wayne State’s academic community. The chapter aligns with the university’s mission of accelerating student mobility by providing professional and academic development opportunities.

"There is a lot of potential for this club to make an impact on students," Raza said. "It is a proud moment for Wayne State as we continue to create opportunities that empower our diverse student body."
